Telehealth Q&A

What is telehealth?

Telehealth is an approach that uses technology to connect patients and practitioners. It’s an alternative to the traditional method of health care delivery, which is a face-to-face interaction in which both people share the same physical space.

Advancements in communications technology have made it easier to connect with others. Telehealth simply expands that interconnectivity to the realm of health services.

This approach is nothing new. Since telephones became a part of most American households, people have been using technology to connect with their practitioners. Today, most telehealth visits are done using desktops, laptops, tablets, or smartphones equipped with cameras or microphones.

What are the benefits of telehealth?

Telehealth offers numerous benefits and is quickly becoming a common part of health service delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic did a lot to force innovation in health care, and telemedicine is a great example.

Convenience is a primary reason why so many people are embracing telehealth services. The ability to connect with your doctor from the comfort of home without traveling across town or waiting in a crowded waiting area is a powerful motivator in giving telehealth a try.

For many people, telehealth is also a much safer way to get the care needed to thrive. People with compromised immune systems and those who are medically fragile need a way to connect with their health team without traveling and becoming exposed to viruses, bacteria, and other potentially dangerous substances.

Telehealth visits also offer the ability to receive guidance and support when an in-office visit is simply not possible. Many people use these services when spending extended periods out of the country for work or while on vacation.

How should I prepare for my telehealth visit?

A few moments of preparation can make your telehealth visit far more productive. Begin by thinking about where you’d like to set up for your visit. If you share your home with others, consider finding a place that is out of the way and quiet since you’ll be using your microphone and speakers to interact.

You might also think about your lighting. If your provider needs to diagnose your symptoms, the ability to see you clearly is essential. Too much glare on your screen can interfere with your ability to see her during your interaction.

Checking to make sure your device is charged and positioned properly is also a good idea. As with all health visits, it’s helpful to make a list of questions and concerns so that nothing is overlooked during your visit.

We will be using a healthcare-compliant version of Zoom as our video chat platform; instructions will be sent to you via an email after you make your appointment.
